Copenhagen International School Denmark

Since 1963, Copenhagen International School has served the international community of greater Copenhagen. As one of the twelve founding-member schools of the International Baccalaureate (IB), we provide a complete educational programme for students from ages 3 to 19, from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. English is the medium of instruction.

Our 563 students, girls and boys, young men and women, who come from 50 or more countries, follow a programme of studies leading to an IB Diploma or a High School Diploma. Grade 11 and 12 students may also choose to take the PSAT, SAT 1 and SAT 2 tests required by some universities.

Of our school's 88 teachers, 67 are full-time. Classes are small with a maximum of 22 students. While academic excellence is at the heart of our school, we also value active involvement in sports and extracurricular activities. Students receive a high level of pastoral care and support that includes a well-developed resource programme and English as a Second Language.

Accredited by both the European Council of International Schools (ECIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC), CIS is a private non-profit organization recognized by the Danish Ministry of Education, from which we receive a subsidy. A director and two principals report to an eleven-member School Board of elected parents.

The school's Mission Statement sets out our school's purpose, aims and philosophy, all of which are academic in tone and international in spirit. Parents and students alike tell us that CIS is a friendly place to pursue one's future.

The school year runs from early August to mid-June, with week-long breaks in October, February, and April, as well as a three-week break from late December into January. School hours are: 8:40 to 14:50 for pre-K. to grade 5; 8.30 to 15.00 for grades 6 to 10, and 08:40 to 15:55 for Grades 11 and 12. Lunch is served in our newly built atrium. Many extracurricular activities, clubs, and team sports are available to students each afternoon.

Copenhagen, a culturally diverse and historically rich city, offers much for our students and gives us opportunities to enhance our educational programme. Located in the town of Hellerup, a quiet and attractive suburb, CIS is close to shops, libraries, the sea, and the rolling green landscapes of the King's Deer Park. Hellerup Station is a five-minute walk from the school, the centre of Copenhagen a fifteen-minute ride away on the justly acclaimed Danish Rail System. For pre-K to grade 6 students whose parents request it, we also provide a bus service.
